A few ideas for what to do this weekend:
“Celebrate Urban Nature” at Magnuson Park with a fun event tomorrow for the whole family. It all begins at 9 a.m. at the Magnuson Community Center with a tour of the park’s wetlands areas. It ends 2 p.m. and includes:
–A FREE concert by “Caspar Babypants” (the kids music project created by Chris Ballew, lead singer for Presidents of the United States of America).
–Presentations by Woodland Park Zoo Up CLOSE (Birds of Prey) and NOAA-Marine Mammal Division.
–Interactive booths and displays featuring Seattle Bug Safari and more.
–Nature-themed carnival and prizes.
–Roving reptiles and art and nature activities.
The event is being staged by Seattle Parks and Recreation and EarthCorps.
The Wedgwood Vision Project has its second community-wide meeting tomorrow at Wedgwood Presbyterian from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. What do you see as the future identity of Wedgwood? What thoughts do you have on land use and design, how the neighborhood should influence development of its commercial and residential areas? Come share your ideas.
This is the second of two public meetings to create a Wedgwood Vision Plan, which organizers say will be useful in working with developers as new projects come up in the neighborhood. Hot beverages and bagels will be served. Kids are welcome. Whether or not you can make it, be part of the project and be heard by taking the project’s online survey.
Go for a walk — but get your map first, courtesy of Feet First. The nonprofit organization, which promotes walkable communities throughout the Puget Sound, is giving away its latest map (a walking map of Northeast Seattle). It’s a full-color, 17 x 23-inch map that covers the area of Seattle east of I-5 north of NE 50th Street. Neighborhoods included are Wedgwood, View Ridge, Meadowbrook, Bryant, Ravenna, North Matthews Beach, Maple Leaf, Lake City, Northgate, Cedar Park, Pinehurst, Lake City and many others.
The map highlights special interest areas, including the Wedgwood Rock, a glacier erratic deposited more than 14,000 years ago by the Vashon Glacier. The map is free and is available at libraries and community centers in Northeast Seattle and at many coffee shops, local bookstores, churches and health clinics.
The North Seattle Baseball Jamboree starts at 10 a.m. with opening ceremonies and continues the rest of the day with a Hit-a-Thon and games at the Lower Summit Field, across from the Nathan Hale High School track/football stadium.
