Police have a suspect in last week’s robbery of Fresh, according to co-owner Wendy Schwartz and she says all the credit goes to an unlikely source: her mailman.
After the robbery and after Schwartz and her store clerk had spoken with police, Schwartz was chatting with her mailman and filled him in on what had happened. She asked him to be on the lookout and described the suspect — a white male, about 6 feet, age 19, with bad acne and/or scars and his face. “He told me that he’s never been able to help find anyone find anything in all of his years as a mailman, not even a lost dog,” she said.
But a short while later, he came running back. He had spotted someone matching that description at a house on 34th Avenue NE, right behind Fresh. Police detained the suspect for a short time and are continuing to investigate. No further details are available but it is hoped that an arrest will be made.
“Be nice to your mailman,” says Schwartz, “they are the eyes and ears of our neighborhood.”
The crime has left Schwartz and her staff feeling uneasy. “I’m angry about that,” she said. “I’ve really been surprised by what a strong impact this has had.”
In response, Fresh has upgraded security in multiple ways. And she’s very appreciative of her neighbors who have offered support. “Everyone has just been great; we appreciate that a lot.”
