UPDATED 2:20 p.m.: The mother of the man fatally shot by police at the Wedgwood QFC expressed sadness and weariness in the aftermath of the Monday night incident.
“At least now I know he’s at peace,” said a subdued Judy Rosenfeld in front of her View Ridge home, which she has shared in the past with her son, Ariel Rosenfeld, 43, the man killed in the incident.
Describing her son as “mentally ill,” Judy Rosenfeld said her son was not a criminal and needed help, citing many years of struggles. She declined further comment.
MAN ID’D AS ARIEL ROSENFELD, CRIMINAL HISTORY DETAILED
Updated 1:40 p.m.: Our news partner the Seattle Times has identified the man who was shot and killed as Ariel Rosenfeld, 43.
Rosenfield, the Times reports, had been the subject of protection orders barring him from contact with his wife and mother. Rosenfeld had convictions for burglary, arson, attempting to elude police and unlawful possession of firearms, the paper said. He served 18 months in prison for a 1989 firearms violation and 16 months in prison for attempting to elude police in 1995, said the paper, citing court records.
MAN SHOT BY POLICE AT WEDGWOOD QFC HAS DIED
Updated 10:15 a.m.: The man shot by a police officer Monday night at QFC has died, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office said this morning.
Medical examiners released no further information, pending their investigation. They are working this morning to confirm the man’s identity and other details of his death.
Seattlecrime.com is reporting that the domestic violence incident the man was being sought for involved allegations that he choked his mother into unconsciousness.
The man, 43, has a long record, according to the Web site, having been booked into the King County Jail at least 15 times since 1985. Cases involving the man include domestic violence assault, harassment, attempting to elude police, weapons, drugs and obstruction.
The Web site also is reporting that the man has frequently fled from police in the past. The report also cites an unnamed police source who says the man was shot in the abdomen, not the back as has been reported by several media outlets, who attributed the information to the Seattle Fire Department.
Police spokesman woman Renee Witt said she could not comment on the Web site report. She did say, however, that police would give a briefing about the shooting later today at police headquarters.
QFC was open this morning and it was business as usual — very quiet. There were no signs of a shooting anywhere in the store.
An employee told the Wedgwood View that they believed the man who was shot was not a QFC employee but someone from a cleaning company that comes in nightly to do janitorial work at the store.
