A burglar on Wednesday kicked open the front door of a home and then ransacked it — in the middle of the day — in the 6800 block of 29th Avenue NE, several neighbors reported.

Though the home is in the Ravenna-Bryant neighborhood, the Wedgwood View is reporting it in light of the recent break-ins in View Ridge.

Neighbors said the break-in occurred between 2 and 5 p.m. They said multiple items — including a TV and Wii game set — were removed through the front door.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to call Seattle Police.

Diane Horswill, crime prevention officer for SPD’s North Precinct, talked to View Ridge residents on Tuesday about the importance of strengthening doors. In addition to having a heavy door, she said one simple thing you can do is reinforce your door frame with long screws that anchor the frame to the supporting 2×4 next to the door. Dead bolt strike plates also should be installed with screws that are long enough (usually 3-4 inches) to reach the 2×4 stud. She said many burglars are getting past dead-bolt-protected doors by shattering door frame material because it’s usually weaker than the door or the lock.

She has more tips on protecting your home on her Web page and also is available to do in-person home security checks, providing tips on how to improve the security of your home.
