Magnuson Park honored for wetlands, sports fields

Magnuson Park has received a “Best Park Design” award at the recent Washington Recreation & Park Association (WRPA) annual conference, the city Parks and Recreation Department has announced.

The wetlands and athletic fields project, built on the former U.S. Navy air station, consists of five new sports fields and a sports meadow with more 35 acres of wetland and habitat areas interwoven into the design. The project’s impact on wetlands and wildlife areas was a point of major contention in recent years.

The park includes baseball and softball fields, as well as what is believed to be North America
