The woman who was hit by a vehicle Friday morning while crossing NE 45th Street near the U Village remains in “very serious” condition at Harborview Medical Center, according to several people connected to the family.
The woman, 45, lives in Laurelhurst and was out for a jog when the incident occurred, said Cary Lassen, crime prevention trustee for the Laurelhurst Community Club. Lassen said she has been told that the family does not want to release any further information, including the woman’s name. “It’s been very traumatic and I’ve been told they would just like their privacy right now,” she said.
The accident continues to be investigated by Seattle Police, who said such investigations can last beyond several months. Anyone who witnessed any part of the accident is being asked to call SPD Detective Tim Wear of the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad at (206) 684-8935.
Lassen said much of NE 45th Street and the road it turns into, Sand Point Way NE, has been a concern of the Laurelhurst Community Club for a long time. “That light in particular (at 36th Avenue NE) is a problem,” she said. “People seem to not see it well and run it all the time.”
On Monday, the Seattle Fire Department responded to a traffic accident at Sand Point Way NE and NE 65th Street, said Dana Vander Houwen, SFD public information officer. A 65-year-old woman was treated at the scene, Vander Houwen said. It’s not clear if the woman’s injuries required hospitalization.
UPDATE 3-24-10: The Laurelhurst Community Club is reviewing the 2007 Sand Point Way Pedestrian study, which called for safety measures along the busy road. Some of the measures have been implemented, and some (including reducing speed limits on some sections, have not. The LCC will talk about the issue at its next meeting, April 12th at 7 p.m. at St. Stephens Church and an SDOT official has been invited.
