The new library at Nathan Hale High School.

Nathan Hale High students and staff recently moved into the school’s newly completed wing, 31,000 square feet of modernized space that includes a new library, updated offices for administration and student services, and 11 renovated classrooms.

One of the main things that stands out about the space is the increased amount of natural light that flows into classrooms and the library. Will all the renovations help students “see the light?” The school district thinks so, citing studies that show improved lighting can lead to higher scores on math and reading tests.

Next up: Construction has begun on another 78,600 square feet that will entail the modernization of classrooms along NE 110th Street. A new two-story forum with tiered seating also will be built and improvements will be made to the main gymnasium, auxiliary gyms and locker rooms and associated facilities. Next fall, the final phase of work will include renovating the remaining 17 classrooms, student commons, band and choir rooms, plus improvements to the site and landscaping. Nathan Hale remains occupied during construction, which is scheduled to be completed in spring 2011.

Stay up-to-date on improvements with the school’s construction Web site, which includes a Web cam.
