Good energy coming out of Sand Point Elementary

Excitement is building over at Sand Point Elementary, which will be re-opening as a Seattle public school in the fall after closing in June of 1988.

Over the weekend, the school had an open house and launched its new Web site, which is a great complement to the blog that has been chronicling its move toward re-opening.

If you missed SPE’s open house, Wedgwood View reader Cathy Ross, who lives near the school and raised two kids who attended SPE in the ’80s, shares some highlights:

About 60 people attended, mostly parents. Principal Dan Warren said he was looking forward to being able to hand-pick his staff for the new school, which will happen this spring. Enrollment for next fall will be around 160 kids and they expect it to grow in future years. The school will be an ELL site (English Language Learners) and those students will be integrated into regular classrooms with extra support, rather than being in separate classes.

A tour of the facility showed it to be in good shape. Teachers were on hand to demonstrate some simple lessons from the curriculum that will be used there. Lots of neat displays and positive energy!
